Rivus Batteries is the company that aims to revolutionize energy storage with a new type of organic flow batteries. The launch is happening in Gothenburg, where Sweden’s first facility is now being installed at a pilot scale. The company’s solution is based on organic materials instead of critical metals like lithium, which both reduces costs and increases sustainability. The company is now highlighted in a new article in Göteborgs-posten.
Rivus won the Founders Challenge in 2023 and has since made an incredible journey with their innovation – creating a more environmentally friendly energy transition with their metal-free flow batteries – and the journey has only just begun!
We at Founders Loft are cheering for the fantastic team at Rivus; Cedrik Wiberg, Andreas Kölling, Lisa Åkerlund, Eduardo Maurina Morais, and others, and we look forward to your new projects that will make a real difference!
In the article, written by journalist Johan Augustin, it is mentioned that Rivus will install a battery at the HSB Living Lab at Chalmers, where solar panels on the building's facade will provide electricity, which will be stored in the organic batteries.
The project is in collaboration with the engineering company Bengt Dahlgren AB, and Andreas Fränne, an energy engineer at Bengt Dahlgren, is quoted in the article: 'This is a new type of battery in Sweden, and we look forward to learning the technology.'
Rivus' flow batteries use organic molecules made up of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen, which means they avoid importing heavy metals from China and Russia. The technology has been tested in the lab and will now be implemented on a larger scale.
'We want to show that our batteries have a long lifespan and can last up to 20 years,' says Cedrik Wiberg, CEO of Rivus Batteries.
The company also plans to install a larger battery facility with a real estate company in Gothenburg next year.
About Rivus Batteries
Rivus develops water-based organic electrolytes for flow batteries. Instead of filling flow batteries with heavy metal salts, such as vanadium, imported from countries like China and Russia, the batteries are filled with organic materials that can be easily synthesized from standard bulk materials available in unlimited quantities. Rivus was founded in 2019 as a spin-off from Chalmers University of Technology and uses technology further developed through research at Åbo University and the Technical University of Denmark.
Rivus is part of the Founders Loft incubator.
